AVMA Aftermath
Mar 13, 2009
Well, the glitter has settled, the hangovers have mostly cleared, and the die-hard party people have finally been hosed out of the after-after-after-party. So much has been said already about this year's AVMAs, so many superlatives and yet it's still hard to adequately capture just how fantastic the event actually was.
The Red Carpet was a kaleidoscope of celebrity frocks and locks, where stylish boys' hairdos vied for as much attention as the girls' gowns; and where the must-have accessories of the night were: blonde babes in short shiny numbers, for the boys in the band; and metallic drag queen-esque platform heels for the girls.
The stand-out gowns were worn by: Pink, in a gorgeous silver Colette Dinigan (although a short number she wore backstage, was even hotter); Nicole Richie in an asymmetrical deep bronze gown she brought with her from L.A, and the Veronicas whose black self-designed outfits with plunging necklines and ample décolletage left them looking like renegade daughters of Elvira Mistress Of The Dark.
The best boys' cuts were worn by: absolutely everyone in Yves Klein Blue, Scott Targett from Dukes of Windsor and Ian D'Sa from Billy Talent.
Pink ripped the roof off the venue with her spectacular opening show performance. Rising out the floor on a revved-up, tricked-out harley, she took control of the stage, before straddling one of her female dancers, and rising into the air for a piece of fabric acrobatics that would have done Cirque de Soleil proud.
Each of the following 13 performances totally ripped it up, but special mention must be made of: Fergie's show, "Glamorous", which was exactly that; Billy Talent's "Fallen Leaves" - complete with gothic Red Riding Hoods; 30 Seconds To Mars, with full boy's choir and bloodied brides; Joel Madden rockin'-out amongst the crowd during Good Charlotte's show; and the amazing clarity and power of the vocals from Sneaky Sound System front woman, Miss Connie.
If banning Snoop Dogg from the country proved anything, it was how much he's loved by his Australian fans and fellow performers. He may not have been there in person, but he was very much there in spirit. The crowd cheered at every mention of him, and booed the Government officials who banned him.
Hosts Fergie, Benji and Joel Madden did a fantastic job, keeping the awards show pumping, funny, and utterly cheese-free.
The presenters were all suitably, hot, glamorous, amusing and entertaining but you couldn't help but feel that Phil Jamieson and Sophie Monk somehow "misunderstood the assignment".
Kristin Cavallari was a definite crowd favourite; but the most memorable presenter moment of the night belonged to Nicole Richie, whose unique pronunciation of Shannon Noll's name, will forever see him referred to as "Shah Non". Absolute Gold!
When the show wrapped, invited guests headed-off to the official after-party at The Lair, where winners rubbed shoulders with industry, and fans alike. They danced to hot music, and partied till they dropped (literally), and then eventually moved on to other after parties at venues and hotel suites throughout the city.
