It's official! Australia has technology. Specifically, we have our very first digital radio station: Radar. Launched by Austereo, the station is dedicated to undiscovered artists and their music, i.e. no Britney, or Pink, or any of the other acts you usually associate with a commercial radio network.

The radio station is currently streaming live online and will be broadcast free-to-air around the country Perth when digital radio officially launches in this country in 2009. If you'd prefer to hear the 'future of radio' right now, you can point your web browser towards Radar Radio.

Digital radio has been available in the US and other developed countries for a million years now. Like digital TV, it allows for much higher quality and more viewing/listening options. So, for instance, if you're stuck in traffic and listening to a certain announcer is making you blind with rage, you can choose from a multitude of different announcers to annoy you.

While Austereo is the first cab off the rank in Australia, you can expect a host of new stations to pop up in 2009. By year's end we should have plenty of stations covering a multitude of obscure and niche music. And yes, you can expect one that plays nothing but Cold Chisel, 24/7.
