The first single to be dropped off their much-anticipated new album, ‘Inshallah’, ‘Foreign Land’ is the aural equivalent of stepping into a snow-filled valley with no clothes on; pounding, visceral and completely absorbing the senses.
From the Arabic sounds which wail across the piece to the stomping insistence of unusual percussive elements, Eskimo Joe stretch the fabric ever further with this unique composition. There are too many reference points to detail; the most obvious being the guitar progressions of Led Zeppelin’s ‘Kashmir’ and the glam-rock drums of Muse.
Through it all, however, comes the trembling wail of lead singer, Kav Temperly, not only the driving force behind Eskimo Joe, but also the architect of much of the recent soundscapes. His voice, ringing out with the conviction of a veteran, adds majestic weight to this already massive song. With a pastiche of influences that wouldn’t seem out of place on a Gotye track, Eskimo Joe look set to redefine to radio terrain once more.
