First there was Jason Singh’s “We’re gonna change the world as you know it” laugh-a-thon. Now comes Evermore with “We’re here to entertain/And anaesthetise your pain/Hey boys and girls/This is truth of the world.”
The title is debatable, and at first it seems like another bunch of cocky indie kids mouthing off. But, apparently, Evermore’s current album is a concept album examining propaganda and advertising, so perhaps this song is some kind of biting social commentary. If it is, then it’s just not immediately apparent, which means it wasn’t the greatest choice for the album’s first single.
A band of Kiwis, Evermore have a lot of solidity about them. They’ve long had a solid following in this country, they get solid festival spots and a solid reception, and they release music that is solid. ‘Hey Boys and Girls’ is less successful than some of their work, as it tends to straddle the line between being catchy and annoying.
Still, Evermore are, although young, an experienced band with a number of successes behind them, and the concept for the album has promise. Perhaps this song will sit more comfortably, and make a lot more sense, in the album context.
