Album sales in the US have tanked in the lead-up to Christmas.

Keeping in line with the rest of the (broken) economy, music sales have been slow, with some high-profile releases missing their sales targets by a considerable margin.

The Thanksgiving weekend is traditionally one of the busiest retail periods of the year in the US; it's also a launching pad for potential Christmas blockbusters. Or at least it was. Sales were down 10-30% over the weekend, with Kanye West's '808s And Heartbreak' expected to move around 425,000 - 450,000 units in its first week. While that sounds reasonable, it's less than half the number last year's 'Graduation' album sold.

After 14 years of waiting, Guns N Roses' 'Chinese Democracy' has also failed to shift as many copies as expected. The album is expected to clock up sales of around 250,000 by week's end - down considerably from the 300,000 to 700,000 people were predicting. Meanwhile, over in the UK the album was beaten to number one by 'The Killers' new album, 'Day And Age'.

Oh yeah, speaking of West, he's in the country this week headlining the 'Glow In The Dark Tour'. Joining him up on stage is hip hop legend Nas.
