The atmosphere on the scarlet rug outside the Sydney Convention Centre - home to this year's Vodafone MTVAA's - is fizzing like a just dropped Berocca tablet. Believe us.

Flocks of fans went ballistic as The Killers walked the welcome mat. It was a wonder Brandon Flowers - rocking his trademark feathery shouldered jacket - and his crew didn't suffer burst ear drums.

Fans of US soft rockers The Fray weren't far behind on the squeal-o-meter, while homegrown rockers Wolfmother, The Vines and Something With Numbers drew similar lobe-busting applause.

And if our eyes weren't mistaken it was the contestants from Australia's Next Top Model who were leading the charge screaming, at one point chasing an array of grizzly rockers up and down the rosy carpet.

The rest of the girls were looking... Steamin'.

Reality princess and red carpet host Audrina Patridge was blinging in gold with huge paperclip-shaped earrings while VJ Ruby Rose looked out of this world in a space-tastic costume she could have nicked from Lady GaGa's closet.

Gals on presenting duties also looked hot with Dannii Minogue in a shimmery silver gown and Delta Goodrem rocking a gorgeous green dress. (Maybe in homage to her Oirish fella Brian McFadden?)

Adelaide songbird Sia, meanwhile, drew gasps of admiration with an eye-popping red dress that looked as if it was knocked up from Christmas tree tinsel.

Don't miss her performance later in the night.

Take it from us, it's bloody great.
