Three-time Grammy Award winner Ne-Yo has touched down in Oz!
The smooth-talking R&B superstar - famous for smashes including ‘Because Of You,’ ‘Closer,’ and ‘Mad’ - is here for Australia’s largest urban musical festival, ‘Winterbeatz 2010.’
Taking to the road alongside Big Boi, T-Pain and Aussie’s no 1 record-spinner DJ Brown, we caught up with the singer ahead of his epic performance in Sydney.
The hitmaker, whose explosive fourth album ‘Libra Scale’ is set for release in September, tells MTV about teaming up with Lady Gaga, becoming a Dad, and getting wild on tour...
MTV: Welcome to Oz Ne-Yo! Any backstage ‘Winterbeatz’ goss to tell us so far?
Ne-Yo: We've done one show so far and I can honestly say that I didn't really get to see a whole lot of the other acts, everybody was kind of to themselves. Mind you we're going to be here for a little while, so I'm guessing it's gonna get pretty wild!
MTV: Tell us about your new album ‘Libra Scale’…
Ne-Yo: I did something a little different with this album, it's honestly the most conceptual album that I've done this far. I wrote a short story, a script if you will, of the same name. My plan was to take this script and turn it into a 30-45 minute mini movie. And my album would be the soundtrack. But movies cost a lot of money, and take a lot of time.
So basically I had to take my story and chop it up into about five to seven pieces, so now we tell the full story through the videos. If you can, get the long versions of the videos, the 8- 10 minute versions of the videos, and they all tie into one another, thus telling the full story of ‘Libra Scale.’
MTV: We hear you might be doing a duet with Lady Gaga…
Ne-Yo: I'd love to a duet with Lady Gaga. A lot of people asked me if ‘Beautiful Monster’ had anything to do with Lady Gaga and I can honestly say no, it did not. Lady Gaga had nothing to do with the creation of the record, however, if she were willing to do a duet I would absolutely love to do something with her.
I give credit to Lady Gaga for breathing new life into the creative element of video making. Before her, videos were getting really bland and then Lady Gaga came out with all this new creativity and new energy.
MTV: You’re about to become a Dad for the first time, you must be excited!
Ne-Yo: I'm happy but I'm a little scared, I have to say. I never viewed myself as a father, I never saw myself disciplining a child, so it's going to be interesting, to say the least.
MTV: And what do you think the key will be to balancing your family and career?
Ne-Yo: Just that, balance. Finding that proper balance of just enough of both to where neither one gets neglected. I will not neglect my child, that's something that will not happen. I’ve just got to figure out a way to balance it out. And me being a 'Libra', our whole thing is balance, so I think I'll be alright.
MTV: Do you have any plans to come back to Australia to tour with your new album?
Ne-Yo: With this new album we're trying to touch the entire world, so we will absolutely be back in Australia touring with this album.
Get your hands on Ne-Yo’s highly-anticipated hot new album ‘Libra Scale’ on September 20.
