When Nirvana dropped their debut album on September 24, 1991, their label DGC Records doubted it would sell more than a few thousand copies. Little did they know, that not only would ‘Nevermind’ kick off the 90s grunge alt rock explosion, but it would become one of the biggest selling rock albums of all time and continue to inspire countless acts and albums more than two decades after it’s release.
As the 20th anniversary of the landmark album ‘Nevermind’ approaches, Nirvana’s management and estate are commemorating the occasion by releasing a remastered edition, which is packed with never-before-heard material, live performances and alternative remixes.
Recorded in April 1990 at Butch Vig’s Smart Studios in Wisconsin, Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic and drummer Chad Channing only managed five days of recording before they ran out of money – but the demos were strong enough to land them a major label deal a few months later.
Talking about the day they recorded the seminal album that would go on to be what critics call one of the best rock albums of all time, Krist Novoselic told Rollingstone.com:
"We had this motel room, and we would go to Smart Studios and work every day," he says. "Kurt was charming and witty, but he would go through these mood swings. He would be totally engaged, then all of a sudden a light switch would go off and he'd go sit in the corner and completely disappear into himself. I didn't really know how to deal with that."
Eight of the demos from that week, including rehearsals of ‘In Bloom’ and ‘Lithium’, are to be included in the never-before-heard tracks on the set, which will be sold in versions ranging from a single CD to a five-disc box.
Assembled by Novoselic, Dave Grohl, Vig, Nirvana's management, and representatives of Cobain's estate, the set will include extras including B sides, alternate mixes and an entire live show, as well as a remastered version of 'Nevermind.'
