NZ Olympian Nikki Hamblin Advances To Final Thanks To Heart-Warming Sportsmanship
It could have been chaos on Tuesday morning, when NZ Runner Nikki Hamblin tripped and fell during the second heat in the women’s 5,000-meter run. Usually when an incident like that happens for an athlete, it means game over.
But the kiwi’s race didn’t stop there; American, Abby D’Agostino also took a tumble. What happened next was a breath of fresh air for the cutthroat event.
Instead of giving up, D’Agostino urged the NZ runner to finish the race with her.

"Get up, get up! We have to finish!'' D'Agostino told her. "This is the Olympic Games. We have to finish this.'"
Thanks to the support from her fellow athlete, Nikki Hamblin was able to continue. After D’Agostino helped Hamblin back up, the pair continued to run. Due to her injured knee, the American competitor was not able to reach her full potential.
Hamblin looked back to check on her fellow athlete to see if she could help, D’Agostino continued to encourage her by saying, “Keep going, keep going”.

The duo finished the race last and even hugged afterwards. It has been decided that despite their finishing times both can advance to the final. Due to the severity her injury D’Agostino could not speak with reporters after the race, but Nikki Hamblin praised her competitor.
"I am so grateful to Abbey for helping me,'' Hamblin said. "That girl was the Olympic spirit right there. I am so impressed and inspired by that.''
Unfortunately, as a result of her injuries Abby D’Agostino will not be able to take part in the fina,l but you can watch Nikki represent NZ in the event this Saturday 20 Aug at 10:40am NZST.
