OutsideIn delivers killer 2015 festival lineup
Previously featuring electronica and hiphop heavyweights such as Freddie Gibbs and The Pharcyde, the fourth annual OutsideIn Festival returns for round two at Sydney University's Manning House.
As Australia’s premier festival of carefully curated electronica, techno and hip-hop, OutsideIn unleashes another huge line up to kick start the party on Saturday September 26.
The first round announcement includes debut Australian shows from frequent collaborators Devin The Dude, and the southern fried, UGK-honed, Big K.R.I.T; the latter touring on the back of his critically acclaimed sophomore album, 2014’s Cadillactica.
Launching his career the same year as the original ‘Dude’ graced our screens, Devin has built a cult following in the seventeen years that has followed, blowin’ that sweet baby kush over every track since, including his seminal weed rap album, Waitin' to Inhale.
Playing alongside the rap pairing is US neo soul crooner, Bilal. Having just released his new album, In Another Life, Bilal will be aided by a full eight piece band, bringing his smooth 60s and 70s soul to life.
Star Slinger will play his soul-inspired poolside psychedelia, crafting sounds instantly recognisable, yet entirely idiosyncratic. Meanwhile ‘Best International Act’ at the 2015 BET Awards, rising UK neo-grime spitter, MC Stormzy, will take the stage and wow audiences with his commercially progressive flows and his brand new track, ‘Shut Up’.
Also announced is dubstep pioneer and Swamp 81 label founder, Loefah, who will be joined onstage by Zimbabwean MC Chunky. With a proven ability to whip any crowd into a frenzy, Loefah and Chunky transition seamlessly between genres and styles.
Part and parcel of OutsideIn’s appeal over the years has been it’s curation of a strong local contingent of acts, often overlooked by larger festivals. Topping this group are local legends, MTV Brand New finalists and Sydney’s favourite twins, Cosmo’s Midnight (pictured below). Remixing the likes of Anna Lunoe and Snakadaktal, their official ‘Sleepless’ reworking was released by Flume and Future Classic. Their latest single, 'Walk With Me', channels Disclosure’s jangly dancefloor vibes, and features fellow OutsideIn act, Perth’s Kučka.
Making waves internationally, Kučka laces silky FKA Twigs-like vocals over off-kilter beats and luscious synths. Already sampled by A$AP Rocky and earmarked as one of Australia’s top five producers, Kučka will bring a live band to Manning House to lure punters into her magical sound.
Rounding out local numbers are Italo disco connoisseurs and party starters, Total Giovanni; dance pioneer, Cassius Select; Brisbane’s genre-bending Charles Murdoch; and multi-instrumentalist, Harvey Sutherland.
