PETA Punk the Pet Shop Boys
While PETA have always used attention-grabbing promos to get their point across, their recent efforts have come across increasingly weird and unhinged.
Having spent a couple of months harassing a videogame manufacturer to include more vegetarian options in their cooking game, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals have now turned their attention to the Pet Shop Boys.
To cut a long story short, they want the duo to change their name to Rescue Shelter Boys to highlight inhumane conditions in pet shops. The LA-based organisation recently sent the UK electronic duo a letter.
"Dear Neil and Chris. You have many loyal fans of the Pet Shop Boys here at Peta. We have a request that may at first seem bizarre, but we hope that after considering the following facts, you will understand why we are asking this of you: will you please consider changing your name from the Pet Shop Boys to the Rescue Shelter Boys".
The letter then spends a couple of paragraphs talking about "profit-hungry breeders" before getting down to the nuts and volts of the matter. "By agreeing to change your name to the Rescue Shelter Boys, you would help raise awareness about the cruelty involved in the pet trade and encourage your millions of fans to consider giving a home to an abandoned or unwanted animal from an animal shelter. So, what do you say?"
Pet Shop Boys stated they were "unable to agree (to the request), but nonetheless think it raises an issue worth thinking about".
