REPORTS: Harry & Megs Commence The Search For A New Insta Handle After Queen Bars 'Em From Using 'Sussex Royal' Branding
More bad news for Harry and Meghan today: it's been reported that the Queen has decided the former royals will no longer be permitted to brand themselves under their 'Sussex Royals' moniker.
Now, this update's coming from a source at the Daily Mail, so perhaps take the news with a grain of salt, but apparently now that Harry and Meghan are officially out of the Royal family, the Queen doesn’t think it’s appropriate for them to continue to use the ‘Sussex Royal’ branding any longer. The Queen came to the decision after ‘complex’ and lengthy talks with her advisors, according to the tabloid.
“After many months of reflection and internal discussions, we have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution. We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent, while continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen. It is with your encouragement, particularly over the last few years, that we feel prepared to make this adjustment. We now plan to balance our time between the United Kingdom and North America, continuing to honour our duty to The Queen, the Commonwealth, and our patronages. This geographic balance will enable us to raise our son with an appreciation for the royal tradition into which he was born, while also providing our family with the space to focus on the next chapter, including the launch of our new charitable entity. We look forward to sharing the full details of this exciting next step in due course, as we continue to collaborate with Her Majesty The Queen, The Prince of Wales, The Duke of Cambridge and all relevant parties. Until then, please accept our deepest thanks for your continued support.” - The Duke and Duchess of Sussex For more information, please visit sussexroyal.com (link in bio) Image © PA
Now, this might not seem like a big deal, but Harry and Meghan have put a fair bit of time and money into building their ‘Sussex Royal’ brand: they’ve created a snazzy website, cultivated a 11-million strong Instagram following using the @SussexRoyal handle and are in the midst – again, according to the DM – of trademarking the ‘Sussex Royal’ name on clothing items, stationary and the like. So yeah, this'll be more than a little irritating for Harry and Meghan.
Back when they first announced that they were stepping back as ‘senior royals’, Harry and Meghan had been hoping to negotiate a kind of part-time royal gig, where they could continue to support the Queen in some sort of official capacity, but also be free to live in North America when they please and generate income outside of their royal allowances. Buuut that didn’t quite fly with the Queen – who essentially told the couple that they either had to be fully in or fully out of the royal family, according to reports.
So, they're out. The most pressing question we have about all of this..? What on earth will Harry and Meghan's new insta handle be?!
