Russell Brand opens up about his marriage to Katy Perry
In the July issue of Esquire, the comedian opened up about his brief union with the ‘Teenage Dream’ singer, and the challenge to stay monogamous as a self-professed sex addict.
“I’ve given over too much of my life to its pursuit,” he said in reference to his addiction. “And I've probably harmed other people, by being selfish. And really, I'd like to be married. I'm just not transmitting that frequency of 'Soulmate! Soulmate!' I'm transmitting the frequency of 'Mmm!'”
The couple called it quits less than 14 months after exchanging vows in October, 2010. While Brand admitted that his womanising ways played a role, the ‘Get Him to the Greek’ actor explained that the demands of fame and individual differences were ultimately responsible for the divorce.
“Some of it's the fame,” the 38-year-old dished. “But I think getting married is…you've got a whole other person that you've got to make as important as you!”
“But I tried it and I loved it,” he added. “I really think she's a lovely beautiful person. It's just hard isn't it? She's got a lot of options, I've got a lot of options, so you've got to really, really want it.”
Brand also revealed that making people laugh continues to be the one thing that drives him; stating that stand-up comedy gives his life purpose and meaning.
“Stand-up is not a frivolous thing. It's not a dangling appendage of my celebrity. It's my absolute core,” he said. “Really the only thing that actually makes me raw is stand-up. When I'm doing it, it's beautiful.”
