What’s on Skrillex’s mind before he hits Stereosonic
Sonny Moore, aka Skrillex, is no stranger to Australia. He’s a regular here on the festival circuit and has been since his massive string of releases in 2010-11 that included ‘Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites’, ‘First Of The Year’ and his Benny Benassi ‘Cinema’ Remix. Skrillex kicked off his 2014 by headlining Shorething on Bondi Beach and he’s returning to Australia to see the year off with his EDM buddies touring on the national Stereosonic bill. It’s not just Australia as a place that he loves though; it’s also the sounds that our talented producers are currently churning out.
In a recent interview with AAP, Skrillex spoke about the influence that Australian electronic music is having on the rest of the world. "Australia doesn't get enough credit for being so ahead of the curve in knowing music and having so much great music coming out”, Moore praised. "There's a sound that comes out of Australia that influences the world."
The electronic house and dubstep producer didn’t stop there, throwing his support behind big and small Australian electronic names, including the ever-successful combo in What So Not (Emoh Instead & Flume), praising their chemistry and the organic combination of the two individuals. "Flume was doing his own thing before, and even though it was electronic it wasn't necessarily club music…But when What So Not released stuff, after that it was like the palette of dance music and bass music changed a lot,” he said.
With What So Not signing to Skrillex’s label OWSLA in 2013, it sparked a whole new interest for Moore in Australia, recently throwing his support and record label behind Carmada, the new venture of Sydney kids LDRU and Yahtzel, as well as featuring Perth producers Slumberjack in his top 10 tracks of the week in November, seeing a core influence come from the What So Not sound wave. "You hear a lot of influence from people now putting out records that sound like they're taking influence from What So Not."
Australian fans kicking along to one of the Stereosonic festival dates over the next month can expect Skrillex to drop in tracks from his 2014 album ‘Recess’, as well as featuring his tasty back catalogue of originals and remixes. Also on tour alongside him will be his Jack Ü partner-in-crime, Diplo. The two producers expect to hit the studio on days off from Stereosonic to finish an upcoming album, telling AAP that he’s expecting a fun ride while Down Under. “We'll definitely have a few laughs, some good memories, maybe a couple of cries as well at the end - it can get emotional."
Stereosonic tours the country over the next two weeks, beginning this weekend in Sydney and Perth, before heading to Adelaide, Melbourne and Brisbane next week, featuring headliners Calvin Harris, Porter Robinson, Tiesto, Diplo and of course, Skrillex
