Oh Fkn Hell: Splendour In The Grass Has Officially Been Postponed Until 2021
After much umming and ahhing, a shift in dates and a (premature) confirmation that it was definitely going ahead this year, Splendour In The Grass 2020 has officially been called off for 2020 thanks to coronavirus.
Seeing how well Australia's fared in flattening the curve – NSW just reached the milestone of no new cases via community transmission in two weeks, which is huge – Splendour's organisers were hopeful that they would be able to go ahead with the festival, which was already shifted to October from its usual July kick-off to allow time for restrictions to ease.
“We have been monitoring the situation closely for the past few months and while Australia is now moving into the recovery phase, there is no timeline yet around the opening of international borders,” wrote Splendour In The Grass co-producers Jessica Ducrou and Paul Piticco in a statement today. “As a result, and with our audience interests front and centre, we must announce the reschedule to 2021 now.”
After a great deal of consideration and with the interest of our beloved fans front and centre, Splendour in the Grass will move the 20th Anniversary event forward to 23, 24 & 25 July 2021 ✨ We intend to rebook as many of the 2020 artists as possible and we have started to work through that process. Please retain your tickets and support live music if you wish to attend next July. All 2020 tickets will be valid for Splendour 2021 edition. For those who are not able to attend these new dates, Moshtix will be in touch with all account holders directly on how to apply for a refund. FOR THOSE WHO WANT TO SECURE THEIR SPOT AT #SITG2021, PRE-LOVED TICKETS WILL BE AVAILABLE TO PURCHASE NEXT MONDAY JUNE 15 FROM 12PM! If you've got tickets, organisers are asking that you hold onto them for next year's event, which is due to take place from July 23-25, 2021. The lineup for 2021 will apparently stay quite similar to the original planned for this year, which included the likes of Flume; Tyler the Creator and The Strokes.
On the upside, if you weren’t able to snag tickets to Splendour in 2020, the organisers will be selling on any tickets they’ve got back from those who can’t make 2021's dates, so there’s a chance you could still attend. Course, the organisers will be hoping that as many people as they can safely fit into the grounds will attend next year as they try and recover from the economic fall-out of rescheduling. “We send a huge thanks to all of our Splendour community for their support during this time, and hope you are all keeping safe and well," the statement read today. "We also send our love to all of the music industry workers who are doing it tough at the moment. We can’t wait to see you all in 2021 for the biggest birthday celebration of all time.”
Splendour In The Grass is one of many music festivals hit hard during the global pandemic, though the industry has been rallying around and finding innovative ways to share new tunes and experiences with fans, with cool events like virtual gigs and drive-in music festivals just the tip of the iceberg. .
