Make Me A Supermodel Australia: Where The Bloody Hell Is The Cast Now?
The year is 2008, Britney Spears conservatorship has been implemented, Lindsay Lohan and Samantha Ronson’s love life is making headlines and Brangelina have given birth to twins.
Amongst these pop culture phenomenons there was one that truly stood out: the first and only season of Channel 7’s Make Me A Supermodel Australia.
For anyone not familiar with the iconic series it was a spinoff of the successful British iteration and was helmed by our very own Miss Universe, Jen Hawkins. Long before her days hosting Australia’s Next Top Model, Jen stood next to Managing Director of Chadwick Models, Martin Walsh, as well as Marie Claire editor and former Kochie’s Angel, Jackie Frank, to judge 14 hopeful Australian wannabe models competing to win a modelling contract and a trip to NYC. The literal dream, yeh?
Make Me A Supermodel was monumental in the sphere of reality television and Australia. It was a series that taught us that to perfect the ideal bulge in an underwear shoot, all you needed was a slice of white bread to give you shape. It was a series that had an arguably superior ancillary show called Off The Runway which gave you a more adult look at the contestants and some Big Brother energy in their living situation which was sadly cancelled after 6 episodes. It was a series that featured Lady Gaga’s "The Fame" as the theme tune, not since Masterchef’s use of Katy Perry’s "Hot N’ Cold" has an Australian reality tv series leant into gay culture so passionately. It was also just a generally horny show that 18-year-old me was right into.
After 12 years it’s only fair to check in and see which of the 14 prospective models stuck with their passion and give ourselves pause to reminisce on the beauty that was Make Me A Supermodel Australia. Because quite literally what else is there to do right now?
The true winner/runner-up of the series should be a familiar face to people all over the globe. Shanina Shaik finished the show and immediately began walking runways and sashayed her way to the now cancelled Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show in 2011. Shanina also began dating guest judge Tyson Beckford shortly after the show concluded and the pair broke up in 2015. After briefly dating Justin Bieber of all people, Shaik was then married to DJ Ruckus in the Bahamas in 2018 and filed for divorce in 2019. Shanina continues to model and recently walked her first virtual fashion show while in quarantine. We love to see her still thriving.
Billy, Billy, Billy. The resident bad boy of the season. If he wasn’t getting his kit off, he was romancing fellow contestant, Courtney. I can remember so vividly Billy and Tyson Beckford jumping naked into a pool at a Marie Claire party to the looks of horror and delight. Sadly Courtney and Billy’s blossoming romance didn’t last the test of time and now Billy spends his days bartending in Byron Bay.
Sara caused a stir during the series when she bravely stood her ground after she refused to model a segment of the show half-naked. After placing 7th in the series, Sara made further headlines in 2011 when she was charged with possessing methamphetamine and cannabis at a rural caravan park cabin, and possessing shotgun cartridges, bullets and a crossbow. Her then boyfriend pleaded guilty and charges against Sara were dropped. Sara returned to the headlines the following year after being thrown from the roof of a moving car after an altercation with a man In Coconut Grove, Northern Territory. Sara now lives a private life in Darwin.
Kassandra can be remembered for fighting with Sara during her refusal to participate in their challenge but was booted off the show shortly after, being the third model to go home. Since the end of the series, Kassandra married in 2017, is a self described cocker spaniel lover and is still serving you face in 2020. Thank you.
Now going by ‘Zac,’ he was best known for owning a near perfect jawline. Although only placing 8th in the series Zac has continued to model til this day and boy has he aged like a fine wine. Currently signed to Unique Model Management in New Zealand where he resides and should be spending his time reporting a Facebook page using his likeness to push a far-right conspiracy theory detailing a supposed secret plot by an alleged "deep state" against Donald Trump and his supporters. Isn’t the internet fun.
We sadly didn’t get to spend too much time with Brooke as she was the second contestant voted out of the competition. Brooke continues to model having featured in a shoot for Bonds Australia with her equally stunning girlfriend.
Tom was a self-described brat which ultimately made for reality tv gold. His passive aggressive relationship with Billy was something wet dreams are made of, while Shanina and his flirtatious relationship continued to horn up an already horny ensemble. It appears Tom has ditched modelling and started his own Property Buyers business under his own name. He could buy my house any day. I don’t know what that means, but he’s hot ok?
Shortly after placing 6th in the series, Hannah left the model mansion and got engaged to her then boyfriend, James Campbell. Hannah continued to model and walked for Su in the Spring/Summer 2009/2010 Collection at Sydney Fashion Week. Since then Hannah is living her best bohemian life working at a Wellness Clinic in Queensland and is giving mum life a crack.
Courtney caused controversy when making it through to the final 14, after critics believed she was a bad representation to teenagers battling eating disorders. The initial outrage didn’t plague Courtney for too long as she went on to place 3rd. Unfortunately Billy and Courtney’s love story didn’t continue on after the cameras went down. Since Make Me A Supermodel Courtney’s name entered headlines most recently in 2018 when the Health Department secretary launched commercial proceedings against Sydney-based company Peptide Clinics, who Chircop was named as its sole director and company secretary. Court documents accused Peptide Clinics of breaching the Therapeutic Goods Act by advertising Schedule 4 poisons, making prohibited claims about their health benefits and misleading consumers about the safety of some substances. Courtney also appeared in a 2012 episode of Dance Academy as a ‘Shop Assistant.’
Lucas was the one and only contestant to quit the show. He also threatened to leave early if Sara found herself in the bottom three after refusing to strip down for a challenge. Lucas has since rebranded as Goliath and has created his own self-published hand drawn indie tarot card deck (sadly sold out but second edition coming soon!). He also has his own YouTube channel where he reads his tarot card deck, one of his latest videos features a deep dive on the Devil Card which he states is a vibrational match for where we are on the planet right now and has titled the piece ‘COVID-19.’ Cool.
Sheridan, who was the fifth contestant eliminated from the series, was the centre of attention during her time on the show as her weight was being criticised by the judges. That didn’t stop Sheridan who has continued her modeling career with Giant Management til this day.
Finally that brings us to our winner of the series, Mr. Rhys Uhlich. The former P.E teacher who took out the title in 2008. Since winning the competition he has married and become a father to two girls, starred in a homosexual storyline on Neighbours, was issued a penalty notice for a drunken bender on Phillip Island in 2011 and most recently modelled for Myer’s ‘Layers of Me’ campaign.
MIA: Bakary Sereme and Luke Quill
Bakary Sereme, former Sydney 2000’s Olympic swimmer for Mali and first contest eliminated from Make Me A Supermodel appears to have disappeared from public eye since filming the series as well as Luke Quill who unconvincingly told Shanina he had ‘seen breasts before’ after she flashed him during a challenge has also faded into obscurity. If you have any information on either contestant please call 1800-WHERE-THE-BLOODY-HELL-ARE-THEY or @ me.
I hope you’ve enjoyed revisiting one of Australia’s most iconic reality TV series of the past two decades and encourage you all to order Goliath’s tarot card deck once they are back in stock.
