Taylor Swift Is #NupToTheCup As She Boycotts Her Melbourne Cup Performance
Last week, Taylor Swift confirmed her musical appearance at this year’s Melbourne Cup races. Yep, we were pretty surprised that Tay Tay would be performing at the ‘race that stops the nation’, but we weren’t mad about it – we definitely reckon she was the horse girl in primary school so it naturally made sense.
However, in an epic false start to this November 5th event, Taylor Swift has pulled out, siting “changes to her Asian promo schedule” as the reason. Now this is pure speculation, but we’re pretty sure it’s got something to do with the criticism from animal activists and we respect that decision.
Yesterday, the chief executive of the Victoria Racing Club, Neil Wilson, confirmed the news in a statement saying that Tay Tay was “now unable to make the trip to Australia” for what was set to be her only Australian performance of the year.
Animal activist groups have been criticising the 'ME!' singer for putting money over ethics and starting the social media campaign #NupToTheCup, calling for the US star to boycott the races.
Thank you @taylorswift13
Fans took to Twitter last week calling on the artist to please change her mind and say #NupToTheCup. We are confident she has made this decision based on her love for animals and are very grateful to her for her cancellation. https://t.co/tbR67Jl7Ng

Thank you @taylorswift13. As a fan I was disappointed you would support the very cruel Melbourne Cup. I look forward to seeing you in Melbourne again soon, but under better circumstances! #nuptothecup

Six horses have died at the iconic racing day since 2013, including The Cliffsofmoher who was euthanised on the track last year following a shoulder fracture.
The Melbourne Cup is slowly being called a national disgrace due to the merciless nature of horse racing with many punters are staying home in protest.
Our solution? Fantasy horse racing. Draw some names out a barrel, stick ‘em into a script and let your imagination run the course.
