Review: The Kooks at 'Groovin The Moo'
Founding members Luke Pritchard (on vocals/acoustic guitar/electric guitar/electric piano) and Hugh Harris (on electric guitar) were joined by 2008 addition Peter Denton (on bass guitar), and newcomer circa 2012 Alexis Nunez (on drums).
Testing some new material amongst fan favourites 'Sway', 'Shine On', 'Always Where I Need To Be' from their second album 'Konk' released in 2008, the crowd of guys and girls alike were immersed in young Britpop at it's best.
Channelling Mick Jagger (sorry Adam Levine, Luke Pritchard owns this) the lead Kook bounced smoothly onto the specially placed two foot high platform at the edge, to above the speaker boxes on either side of the stage, and back again.
In a fitted black long sleeve top, skinny white jeans, and black Chelsea boots, Pritchard peeked out from behind his curly brown mop as if looking directly into the eyes of everyone in the crowd, he shouted "you guys are great, but I think we can do better. I'm gonna turn this into a carnival!"
As the field in front of the Udder Stage echoed along to more tracks from 'Konk' including 'Shine On' and 'Always Where I Need To Be', plus 'The Saboteur' in which Pritchard switched to the electric piano to perform.
Finishing with 'Do You Wanna' (the answer to they lyrics "do you wanna make love to me?" were met with a resounding "yes" from the audience!) from 'Konk', 'Junk Of The Heart (Happy)' from their third album 'Junk of The Heart' released in 2011, you could feel the heartbreak as the set came to a close and this fleeting affair with The Kooks was coming to an end.
"Thank you so much for having us 'Groovin The Moo'! We'll see you next time!" said Pritchard graciously before the band performed the final song of their set, 'Naïve' from 'Inside In Inside Out', met with an ecstatic roar as phones and cameras set to record lit up in front of the stage.
In summary, if you manage to catch The Kooks on their Australian tour, you’re in for a proper treat!
Groovers never fear, you can still catch the stellar 'Groovin The Moo' lineup in Bendigo on May 4, Townsville May 5, and Bunbury on May 11, tickets via www.gtm.net.au.
