EXCLUSIVE: The Veronicas Reckon Fame Is ‘Stupid’ & Being A Celeb Isn’t As Glam As You’d Think
The Veronicas have been a household name in Aus ever since their first single, 4ever, smashed on to the music scene back in 2005. From Untouched-mania to sh*tty breakups – they’ve lived all their ups and downs in the public eye.
So, is being famous all it’s cracked up to be? Weeell, apparently not. In an exclusive interview with MTV Australia, Jess and Lisa Origliasso spoke to us about why their celebrity status feels more irrelevant now than ever.
“It’s stupid,” the 34-year-old twins agree. “It’s the result of success in what we take actual pride in, which is our music,” Jess adds.
“When we’re at home and off the map, we’re just Lisa and Jess,” Lisa tells. “No one’s picking up our dog shit.”
Lisa, who’s in the middle of renovating the Brisbane home she shares with her actor husband, Logan Huffman, says that airs and graces isn’t really their thing. “I’m at this point [where I’m] like literally having to pee outside of my house because I don’t have a bathroom … it’s humbling.”
It’s these simple moments that the twins wanted to share on their upcoming reality show, The Veronicas: Blood is For Life.
“I think we just really hoped that it [the show] would capture a lot of who we are that the public don’t get to see … like our relationship with our Mummy now and our relationship with each other,” Jess explains. “And the contrast between The Veronicas when we’re in performance mode and then [when we’re just] Lisa and Jess.”
The idea of celebrity is clearly something that the twins have given a decent amount of thought – they’re kinda philosophical about it. Given the intense media interest around the pair lately, it makes sense.
“I think that people in entertainment and people with the social construct of ‘celebrity’ are upheld to this superhero-like standard,” Jess says. “It’s a privileged position, but then at the same time, people are quick to take away other rights because of that: your right to be human, your right to make mistakes, your right to just not be judged 24/7.”
Making it big at 21 (just outside of those tricky child star years) the twins know the dangers of believing your own hype. The fame game is a fickle one. “One minute they love you, one minute they don’t,” Jess says. “If you base any of your character on whether you’re popular, it’s movable.”
“You believe your own bullsh*t, it’s movable.”
