Australia’s 11 best summer beer gardens
Summer in Australia forces even the most devoted night owls out into the sun. Late night clubbing is brushed aside for Sunday sessions, sun-soaked Saturdays and long lunches with plenty of beer. To get you ready for the weekend we’ve tried and tested the best beer gardens across the nation and narrowed it down to eleven destinations to wet your whistle.
COURTHOUSE, Newtown, Sydney
The Courthouse courtyard is something special. Shaded by a hibiscus tree and an overlooking balcony, the beer garden attracts a varied crowd of students and Newtown locals craving a cold one. Even though there’s plenty of seating, the Courthouse is always packed to the rafters – best to get in early, park yourshelf under the hibiscus and stay long until the evening.
THE PLOUGH INN, South Bank, Brisbane
Overlooking South Bank and Brisbane city, The Plough Inn’s beer garden is only a recent addition coinciding with live entertainment on the weekend. Tons of tunes, beer and sun – what more could you ask for?
NEWPORT ARMS, Newport, Sydney
A beautiful beer garden with an even more spectacular view, no matter where you are the highlight is deifntiely the location. If the Northern Beaches is too long a stretch for a night event, then the beer garden solves all your problems. Lie back on a deckchair, soak up the sun on the grass or watch televised sporting events on their massive outdoor cinema screen. Did I mention it’s the largest waterfront beer garden in the country? Sold.
GREAT NORTHERN HOTEL, North Carlton, Victoria
Weather in Victoria isn’t always conducive to outdoor dining and drinking but with 22 beers on tap rain, hail or shine the Great Northern is always full to the brim. Melbourne’s largest beer garden will become a sure favourite and have you coming back time and time again.
THE GLENMORE, The Rocks, Sydney
Who doesn’t like a million dollar view of Sydney Harbour? This pub is a Sydney landmark and boasts the most beautiful rooftop beer garden in the Rocks. With only a small capacity (in comparison to the monster pubs on this list) you must get in early to score a table overlooking the skyline.
BRISBANE HOTEL, Highgate, Perth
Don’t get confused (like I did), the Brisbane Hotel is actually located in Western Australia. Going for the island resort vibe with palm trees and a lush lawn, the beer garden is large enough to accommodate formal and informal dining meaning stubby holders and heels are welcome.
THE NORFOLK, Redfern, Sydney
If you’re a first-timer you wouldn't tell that The Norfolk had been recently renovated. Alternative-chic with unique food and cool vibes to match, people come from all around to check it out. You might be hard pressed to find a seat in the tree covered courtyard, but standing isn't an effort in this gem.
THE MAID, Stepney, Adelaide
The award-winning Maid Hotel is all about Sunday Sessions. Forget about work on Monday, you deserve a cold beverage with mates at one of the finest beer gardens in the country. Although it’s on the smaller side, we don’t think size matters in this case. It’s pretty RADelaide.
THE ROSE HOTEL, Chippendale, Sydney
This is the beer garden to go to for delicious and affordable pizza (to accompany your beer of course). A standard go-to for students (Sydney Uni is just a short 5 mins walk), The Rose is always abuzz. It’s multiple levels make finding a seat easy and the gorgeous fairy lights will guide your transition from afternoon bevvys to late night partying. Happy Hour is also usually extended far past the hour…rejoice!
BIMBO DELUXE, Fitzroy, Melbourne
Bimbo Deluxe is cheap, grungy and wacky and they are the best things about it – in a good way. Affordable eats and a wide range of beer, wine and spirits fits the laidback atmosphere and eclectic crowd. With fantastic live music from local bands on their outdoor stage, Bimbo Deluxe is where to go for fun and funky times in Melbourne.
THE BERESFORD HOTEL, Surry Hills, Sydney
Beers at the Beresford is a MUST. Fast becoming the most popular bar in Sydney after Justin Hemmes gave it his special touch, the Beresford is funky and fresh. The food is blow-your-mind awesome – seriously, try the sweet potato fries…I die. The relaxed atmosphere of the beer garden is the perfect counter to the hustle and bustle of the club and stage areas upstairs. Open until late (cough, lockout) you’ll be partying from the afternoon well into the night.
