The incredible light display is actually a result of solar winds colliding with the earth’s magnetic field and Otago Museum director Dr Ian Griffin told Stuff it is likely to return.
"The sun rotates roughly every 25 to 28 days, so hopefully in another month or so we'll see it again," he said. "Chances are, if it persists, you'll see it again next month."
