You Can Clip Your Angel Wings Now 'Coz The 2019 Victoria's Secret Fashion Show Has Been Cancelled
After years of growing criticism and backlash, Victoria's Secret have decided to officially call it quits on their annual runway show - closing a end of year tradition that's been in place since 2001.
This announcement comes a few months after Australia's very own Shanina Shaik told The Daily Telegraph that the show had been scrapped.
The official announcement was made this week by the brand's parent company, L Brands Inc.
Chief financial officer, Stuart Burgdoerfer, confirmed the cancellation. Upon being asked if the show was going ahead, he said "no, we'll be communicating to customers, but nothing that I would say is similar in magnitude to the fashion show."
"We think it's important to evolve the marketing of Victoria's Secret."
Audiences for the show have been decreasing for years now, with 2018's show earning just over 3 million viewers - as opposed to the 12 million that tuned in for the first show in 2001.
On top of that, the brand has received countless criticism for their lack of body diversity among the models, with high profile models like Ashley Graham having previously condemned the show. Aussie model Robyn Lawley even called for an entire boycott of the show - and it looks like her mission was accomplished.
The brand also came under fire when the chief marketing officer made some f*cked comments about hiring transgender models, saying it disrupts the "fantasy" of the brand. Since then, however, they have hired their first trans model, Valentina Sampaio.
