US Cops Accidentally Used The Chilling Alarm From ‘The Purge’ To Signal A COVID-19 Curfew & Left Locals Terrified
Imagine being on a walk or sitting at home in your lounge room and suddenly hearing the siren from horror film The Purge come on. Terrifying, right?
Well, that was the situation that residents of Crowley, Louisiana found themselves in recently when cops mistakenly used the Purge siren to signal the start of the city’s 9pm coronavirus curfew, according to IndieWire.
Per Indiewire, Crowley is in an area with “the worst rating for the rapid spread of the virus”, so in an effort to curb the rate of infections, the city had put in place a strict 9pm to 6am curfew, stopping citizens from leaving their homes. Someone in the police dept obviously thought an alarm would be a helpful nod to the curfew time, but that didn't exactly go to plan.
For those of you who haven’t seen The Purge, here's a little recap: the 2013 horror is about what goes down when the govt makes every crime under the sun legal on one night of every year. It's kinda like a 12-hour hall pass where literally anything goes. In the film, the premise of the concept is that if you let people do whatever they want every so often, they'll comply to the rules more outside of those times. So, a shitty twelve hours makes for lasting world peace. The alarm in the film signals that the 12-hour purge period is about to begin. After it goes off, murder, theft and general debauchery of all kinds ensues, which explains why locals were rattled when the Purge siren went off by the police the other day.

Crowley Police Chief Jimmy Broussard told local news station KATC that he had no idea the sound was from the film and that he had no plans to use that sound or any others moving forward.
The sheriff from the wider area, Acadia Parish, issued a statement saying: “Last night a ‘Purge Siren’ was utilised by the Crowley Police Department as part of their starting curfew. We have received numerous complaints with the belief that our agency was involved in the process. We were not involved in the use of the ‘Purge Siren’ and will not utilise any type of siren for this purpose.”
He then went on to say, “Calls regarding this matter should be directed to the Crowley Police / Chief Broussard and not the Acadia Parish Sheriff’s Office”.
It's an unfortunate mistake to make at a time like this, that's for sure.
