I Wonder How Wise It Is For James Charles To Declare His DMs ‘Open’
Another day, another reason for the internet to be extremely angry (or thoroughly disturbed) with James Charles.
Earlier this week, the beauty influencer made his (unwelcome) return to the internet. He discussed the serious grooming allegations against him during a ‘Get Ready With Me’-style video. It was quite strange. Of course, the general discourse wasn’t in Charles’ favour, with many finding his return off-putting and insensitive, given the nature of the allegations Charles is facing.
So, why, just a few days later, would James Charles declare his DM’s ‘open’ once again?! Yep, Charles uploaded an Instagram story saying he was looking for someone to help with designing his YouTube thumbnails, so asked fans to DM him with their work and availability.
There’s a lot to unpack here. Firstly, private, inappropriate DMs between fans and Charles is what landed him in hot water in the first place. I think it’s fair to say that having open DMs might not be a good idea given this very recent history. Also, this is an extremely unorthodox method of looking for an employee – particularly considering the other allegations Charles is facing right now.
As many Twitter users were quick to point out: Charles' recent history aside, asking fans to approach an influencer directly for employment seems like a recipe for exploitation.
