A Local's Guide To Exploring Richmond For Less Than $50

Think you've done Melbourne? Think again. The city's inner precincts offer just as much buzz as the city centre, and give provide a serious vibe for visitors who want to do Melbourne like a local. 

Less than a 20 minute drive from Melbourne's CBD you'll find Richmond. This inner city suburb is best known for being home to legendary rock venue, The Corner Hotel, as well as the city's major sports stadium, Melbourne Cricket Ground.

...But Richmond is also the perfect place to visit if you're a little tight on cash.

Our mates at Visit Victoria have enlisted the help of MTV's resident comedian and Melbourne local, Sam Taunton, to give us the lowdown on his favourite Richmond hotspots that won't cost you an arm and a leg.

EAT: Top Paddock

658 Church St

Top Paddock is the perfect restaurant for travellers keen to save the world (and their dollars). This Richmond favourite is all about honest food, good coffee, and most importantly, minimising the impact the business has on the evironment. For instance, Top Paddock offers delish $15 "zero waste dishes," incorporating scrap ingredients that would've normally ended up in the bin. Nice one!

TOUR: Melbourne Cricket Ground

Brunton Avenue

Not only has Richmond's ~iconic~ MCG been home to some of the country's most unforgettable games, it's a pretty damn awe-inspiring venue to visit. For just $25 the legendary MCG volunteers will take you behind-the-scenes on an epic tour through the stadium where you can get up close and personal with where the legends play.

PIG OUT: Benny Burger

If you're looking to line your stomach with something greasy with #noregrets, Benny Burger is just one of many epic Swan St burger joints you have to visit while in Richmond. Celeb chef Shannon Bennett is the brains behind Benny Burger, a restaurant offering sustainable, ethically produced and locally sourced burgers...plus weekly specials that are easy on your bank account. DRINK: Mountain Goat Brewery

80 North St

If you're on the hunt for a Richmond watering hole, look no further than Mountain Goat Brewery. These guys have been wetting our whistles since 1997 and show no sign of slowing down with epic concoctions like the Westy Kong Hazelnut Brown Ale and Hightail Ale with Smoked Chipotle and Cinnamon. The brewery and bar is open Wednesday, Fridays and Sundays, with free tours every Wednesday night and Sunday arvo!

FIX UP, LOOK SHARP: Dr. Follicles

143 Swan St

Melbourne is known for their hipster barbershops, but Dr. Follicles on Richmond's Swan St goes the extra mile. Sit back, relax, and enjoy a fresh cut to the sounds of timeless beats on wax while you sip on an icy cold (free) beer! With cuts starting at just $45, Dr. Follicles is the perfect place to sharpen up without breaking the bank.

WATCH: The Corner Hotel

57 Swan St

The Corner Hotel is a bonafide Richmond icon. This Melbourne institution has a long history, spanning back to jazz concerts in the 1940s, and over the years has seen gigs from the likes of Blink 182, Crowded House, Interpol, Lorde, Queens Of The Stone Age, Public Enemy, Tame Impala, The White Stripes, Vance Joy, Mick Jagger and more. With new acts playing seven nights a week, The Corner Hotel is must-visit for music lovers passing through Richmond.
