Netflix Drops Trailer For The Mockumentary ‘Death to 2020’ & Hoo Boy, This Is Gonna Be Good

From the creators of 'Black Mirror'; ‘Death to 2020’ tells the tragic story of the heinous year that was.

With a recent COVID outbreak in Sydney causing thousands to spend Christmas in isolation, and a new strain of the virus forcing UK residents into yet another lockdown, the world could probably use some comic relief right about now.

Which makes the trailer drop for Netflix's new mockumentary Death to 2020, being released on December 27, this week perfectly timed. (Though, to be fair, the film could've been released at any point post-March 2020 and it still would've been perfectly timed.)

From the creators of Black Mirror, Charlie Brooker and Annabel Jones (who thoughtfully put their dystopian series on hold, saying it probably wasn't the time for "stories about societies falling apart"), Death to 2020 tells the story of this nightmarish year, weaving together fresh, fictional sketches and monologues with IRL archival footage. It also boasts an all-star cast that includes Samuel L. Jackson, Lisa Kudrow, Leslie Jones, Joe Keery, Kumail Nanjiani, Cristin Milioti and Hugh Grant.

The flick's likely to cover the Australian bushfires, Black Lives Matter protests, Trump's folly and, of course, the ol' global pandemic. Its official synopsis reads: "2020: A year so [insert adjective of choice here], even the creators of Black Mirror couldn't make it up… but that doesn't mean they don't have a little something to add. Death to 2020 is a comedy event that tells the story of the dreadful year that was — and perhaps still is?"

"This landmark documentary-style special weaves together some of the world's most (fictitious) renowned voices with real-life archival footage spanning the past 12 months."

'Death to 2020' hits Netflix on December 27, 2020.
