Yungblud Covered Taylor Swift (With A Dash Of Avril Lavigne) And We’re Not Mad About it

The mash-up we didn't see coming.

The mash-up we didn't see coming.

We can safely say no one expected British artist Yungblud to perform a mash-up of Taylor Swift’s "Cardigan" and Avril Lavigne "I’m with you" for BBC Radio 1's Live Lounge this week, but life throws you curveballs, ok?

Genre-bending artist Yungblud, who hails from Doncaster in the UK, delivered the acoustic performance as part of BBC Radio 1’s Live Lounge Month, the annual celebration of live music finishing up today. The acoustic covers chosen by artists tend to be of a different genre to the artist’s usual style (not unlike Triple J's Like A Version) and in that sense the pop-punk artist definitely delivered.

The mash-up is an interesting mix of old and new, with Taylor Swift's "Cardigan" a favourite of her new album folklore while Avril Lavigne’s “I’m with you” harks all the way back to her 2002 album Let Go. Have a watch of the stripped-down performance below:

The artist was keen to return to the Live Lounge, having been a long-time fan of the BBC series.

“Playing the Live Lounge was always a massive dream of mine – I used to have the CDs as a kid. To do it last year was so insane, but this time I have eight months of repressed energy and a whole lot of fire to get out” he said. "So bring your petrol!"
