Nick Murphy’s Return As Chet Faker With New Single 'Low' Doesn't Hit The Heights Of The Chet We Know

Nick Murphy has released his first single under the Chet Faker moniker in five years, but it's not quite the gold of old.

Nick Murphy has released his first single under the Chet Faker moniker in five years, but it's not quite the gold of old.

Nick Murphy has this week revived his long-dormant but highly successful Chet Faker moniker, after years of releasing music under his own name. While Nick Murphy’s music has been interesting and heartfelt, it never did reach the peak – commercially or qualitatively – of Chet Faker and the 2014 album Built On Glass. After releasing two albums under Nick Murphy in the past year, Chet Faker is back – under a new label, BMG Australia – with new track, "Low".

"Low" is one for die-hard Chet Faker fans, the ones that think his version of "No Diggity" trumps the original. As always, the star of "Low" is Murphy’s stunning, silky voice. Even when it’s layered and looped, it still bleeds with emotion and feels comforting, even when that might not necessarily be Faker’s intention. If you’re a Chet Faker fan, you’ll like "Low".

With drought-laden guitar strings over a rolling drum beat, Chet Faker has seemed to step away from his more electronic stylings that people may know him for. But, that’s where "Low" misses its mark. His music has always been minimalist and about his voice more than anything, but "Low" feels basic. Where his 2014 singles like “Talk Is Cheap”, “Gold” and the outstanding “1998” absolutely shine with feeling and power – whether it is in his triumph or his sadness – “Low” falls flat in comparison.

His new single falls flat because it feels like Faker isn’t giving us all he can, which is what he should be doing if he’s reintroducing a much-beloved project. Nick Murphy has lived many lifetimes since 2014, and that should be reflected in his musical growth, but he has plateaued. His voice is evocative as always, but that’s about it. Maybe this is just a prelude to the full return of the Chet Faker project, maybe it’s just to see if fans are still interested after all these years. Whatever it is, we know Nick Murphy has it in him, and there’s no point waiting to remind us.
