Ryland Adams is back to posting after weeks of silence on socials.
We last heard from Ryland back on July 1, when he reacted rather strongly to Tati Westbrook’s new video “BREAKING MY SILENCE ...” in which she accused his fiancé, Dawson, of manipulating her to go against Charles.
(Catch up on this entire saga and Shane Dawson’s very problematic behaviour before, during and since here. We would also suggest that those more invested check out YouTuber D’Angelo Wallace’s deep dive on Shane Dawson, which paints a disturbing picture of Dawson’s past behaviour and why it matters.)
He hasn’t come out swinging this time, but Ryland is still standing by his fiancé, controversy or otherwise. Whether the rest of Dawson's huge fanbase will follow suit remains to be seen.
Morgan Adams, Ryland’s sister, had more to say about her future brother-in-law in a video she posted in response to recent events.
“It makes me uncomfortable to watch them because when I watch them I’m like ‘who is that?’,” she said. “I don’t feel like that’s a person that I know.”
She went on to say it was a difficult situation to comment on because she wasn’t an outsider, “someone who’s watched Shane on the Internet for years”. “This is somebody that I hang out with in real life, this is somebody that I consider to be a friend, a mentor, a family member. And I just want to say that I’m not defending anything that has been said in the past,” she said.
“I’ve known Shane for three maybe four years now and the Shane that I’ve hung out with and lived with has always been gracious and kind and understanding. He’s always been willing to help everyone. The person that I see from day to day in a non-YouTube, not filming, not trying to be entertaining – that Shane isn’t even in the same stratosphere as the Shane as you get to see in these older clips.” Regardless, Shane acted in ways that many deem unforgivable - and his watered-down apology hasn’t quite cut it for most.
Shane has ducked and weaved out of many a controversy before, but in our current era of accountability, it’s becoming harder and harder for things to go undetected. How people like Shane Dawson and Jeffree Star and their careers continue on past these controversies says a lot about the values we hold as fans and people. Stick around, we’ll be keeping you across it all as it happens here.
