7 Celebrities Who Have Opened Up About Their Mental Health Issues

...

In case you missed it, today is R U OK?Day. An initiative formed by the R U OK? organisation, today is all about opening up conversations around mental health and breaking down the wall of silence between sufferers and their support network. Get involved by checking in with those in your orbit, and committing to supporting friends, family and co-workers who may be struggling every day of the year. To mark the occasion, we thought we’d share some personal stories and words of wisdom from celebrities who’ve had their own struggles with their mental health.

Sophie Turner

“I had no motivation to do anything or go out. Even with my best friends, I wouldn't want to see them, I wouldn't want to go out and eat with them ... I just would cry and cry and cry over just getting changed and putting on clothes and be like, 'I can't do this. I can't go outside. I have nothing that I want to do." - Sophie Turner on Dr Phil's Phil In The Blanks podcast.

Chrissy Tiegen

“I had everything I needed to be happy. And yet, for much of the last year, I felt unhappy. What basically everyone around me - but me - knew up until December was this: I have postpartum depression.” - Chrissy Tiegen on her postnatal depression for Glamour

Kendall Jenner

"I have such debilitating anxiety because of everything going on that I literally wake up in the middle of the night with full-on panic attacks." - Kendall Jenner told Harpers Bazaar

Ryan Reynolds

"I never, ever slept. Or I was sleeping at a perfect right angle — just sitting straight, constantly working [on Deadpool} at the same time ... The expectations were eating me alive." - Ryan Reynolds told Variety magazine.

Amanda Seyfried

"Yeah. I’m on Lexapro, and I’ll never get off of it. I’ve been on it since I was 19, so 11 years. I’m on the lowest dose. I don’t see the point of getting off of it. Whether it’s placebo or not, I don’t want to risk it. And what are you fighting against? Just the stigma of using a tool? A mental illness is a thing that people cast in a different category [from other illnesses], but I don’t think it is. It should be taken as seriously as anything else. - Amanda Seyfried on her obsessive compulsive disorder medication.

Zayn Malik

"The thing is, I love performing. I love the buzz. I don’t want to do any other job. That’s why my anxiety is so upsetting and difficult to explain. It’s this thing that swells up and blocks out your rational thought processes. Even when you know you want to do something, know that it will be good for you, that you’ll enjoy it when you’re doing it, the anxiety is telling you a different story. It’s a constant battle within yourself." - Zayn Malik told TIME.

Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson

"I found that, with depression, one of the most important things you could realise is that you're not alone. You're not the first to go through it; you're not going to be the last to go through it." - Dwayne said in a YouTube video.
