Pressing Questions With Baker Boy

We accost hip-hop legend Baker Boy with a medley of life’s most pressing questions.

Baker Boy hardly requires an introduction. Danzal Baker has an Order of Australia, been named Young Australian of the Year and, perhaps most importantly, has helped bring traditional Indigenous language to the mainstream. All this, and he’s yet to release an album. Since 2017, Baker Boy’s music has been comforting, warm and pure good fun. From “Marryuna” to “Move” and everything in between, Baker Boy got Australia dancing again.

His legacy is not only one of love and kindness, but one of Blakness. Danzal's helped shine light on and pave the way for plenty of other First Nations artists – Birdz, Dallas Woods, Barkaa and more – and now he’ll be participating in a celebration of Indigenous music at the 2021 National Indigenous Music Awards in Darwin next month.

Baker Boy will be returning to the NIMAs stage after absolutely dominating the ceremony last year. Before he does, we pick his brain about the awards, Elon Musk and his dog, Djapa.

Something COVID taught you

Downtime is really important, I didn't realise how much I needed a break until it was forced on me by COVID.

Last movie you watched

Cruella! SO SICK! We actually watched it twice.

Best advice you’ve received

It's pretty cliché, but 'stay true to yourself'.

Someone you really admire

J.Cole. That new album broooo, FIRE!

How do you feel about your hair?

I love my curls!

Describe yourself in three words

Loving, passionate, confident.

One person or thing you think is underrated

Mangrove worms.

Would you rather travel 100 years to the past or the future?

Definitely the future, I'm Blak, the past wasn't good for us. I also want to see if Elon gets to Mars.

What do you doubt most?

That Elon will get to Mars.

Daily ritual you couldn't live without

Morning snuggle with our dog, Djapa.

How are you at 8am?

Still sleeping, I'm working on it. I used to get up at midday.

Something you're passionate about

Fortnite and APEX legends.

Tell us about your music in a sentence

Yolngu Hip-hop/Daaaaance VIBES.

What can you tell us about your upcoming performance at the NIMAs?

I'm stoked to be performing in front of family up in Darwin! I also feel a bit of pressure after cleaning up at the awards last year.

Why did you want to perform at the NIMAs?

I'll take any excuse to get back north, we're using the trip up there to fit in some fishing as well. #priorities.

Who else are you most excited to see perform at the NIMAs?

All of them, I love seeing mob doing so well! I'm really pumped about seeing King Stingray because it will be my first time seeing them. Also pumped to see my arly Dallas really stepping into his own.

The National Indigenous Music Awards airs at 7:30pm on Saturday 7 August, on NITV, Double J, Youtube, Facebook and Twitter.
