After her epic set in the Gotham Tent at Governors Ball Music Festival in New York last Friday, we sat down with Danish singer-songwriter MØ to talk about her upcoming trip to Australia.

She worked with Iggy Azalea on the single ‘Beg For It’, which made it to No. 29 on the ARIA Charts last November. In March her collaboration with Major Lazer and DJ Snake, ‘Lean On’, hit No. 1 in Aus.

MØ is currently working on the follow-up to her debut album ‘No Mythologies To Follow', which was released in March last year.
 
MTV: You're going to be back in Australia next month...

MØ: That's right, yeah, for Splendour. I heard so much good about that festival. Everybody's like, 'It's the craziest f*king coolest place.' So I have really big expectations.

MTV:What are you going to bring to Australia?

MØ: I'm working on this new haircut idea and some new outfits, so that's what I'll bring and hopefully a good spirit and a lot of energy and a lot of craziness.

MTV: Are you going to bring any surprises for us?

MØ: Maybe I will, yeah. But I can't spoil anything because I'm not sure yet, so we'll see!

MTV: You've collaborated with a few people, who do you really like and why?

MØ: Well I like all of them. But, Elliphant is a friend of mine and I love her, I feel so connected to her and I feel like she's in a way my sister in this industry. We started at the same time and I don't know what it is about her, I just feel so connected to her.

MTV: You'll both be in Australia at the same time...

MØ: Yeah! We'll play some club shows together even. It's really nice.

MØ: Then obviously working with Diplo and his team, the whole Major Lazer thing, we've been working together since 2013 and it's been a really nice process. Very free and open creative process where you just send back and forth tracks and write some stuff and you send it back and meet in the studio and do some stuff and then you get an idea and blah blah blah. It's like everything can happen and everything happens, it's not like that tied up like where you've got to go into the studio one day and make a f*king hit otherwise you're fired. It's more like 'Woo, let's do this!' because we love making music and Diplo and his team they are just are all so great and cool people. Their values in life are great, they have their heart in the right place.

MTV: You've collaborated with Iggy Azalea, who else from Aus would you love to collab with?

MØ: I love Tame Impala, I would love to work with them at some point. Also Flume, he's f*king amazing!

MTV: 'Lean On' is now platinum in Australia, can you tell us a bit about that and the process?

MØ: I got the first scratch for the beat at the end of 2013 and back then it was this reggae beat, very slow. I remember I did the chorus, it was totally different but still had some of the same vibes. Then DJ Snake came into the picture and it changed and it got quicker and so I hooked up and we were in the studio and we changed some of the lyrics so it would fit because now it was much quicker, so we shortened it down. Like I said, back and forth and suddenly it was done and I loved it so much.

But I didn't think it would be a single, I was just like 'Oh, it's going to be a f*king cool track, I hope it will be on the album.' Then I got this email from them where they wrote 'Hey, can you meet us in India on this and this date,' and I was thrilled because I loved the song. I've been very into that song because I was a big part of the song writing, so I was so happy that they were going to use it. So now to see the baby fly is f*king amazing.
 
MTV: Tell us about the video for 'Lean On'...

MØ: They were touring in India and they were like 'Can you be here?' and I was like 'Yes!' So I flew in and we had maybe two or three days, no sleeping, just shooting all the time. But seriously normally I would be f*king tired but I was actually so high from that experience - and actually I'm not just saying that to make it a great story - I was really so high on it because it was so nice and beautiful. The people were amazing and the whole thing was so inspiring and exotic.

Major Lazer, I've been a big fan of them for so many years so it was literally like a dream coming true standing there in these crazy outfits having elephants and all these crazy animals around you and being like 'I'm f*king shooting a video for Major Lazer's next single. This is a f*king dream, like seriously.' So I was just totally out of my mind with happiness, and it was so much fun. It was amazing, seriously.
 

MTV: How was Coachella?!

MØ: Really nice. It was a dream coming true - again! Maybe three or four other bands from Denmark have played Coachella and for us it's like almost a mythical thing, something that never happens. I remember when my manager called me and said 'We got Coachella' I was freaking out.

It was so nice being in the desert and it was so beautiful and there was such a nice vibe going on. And I saw Beyoncé! She was behind one of the stages and I was like - my band were like 'It is her,' and I couldn't believe it, I was like 'No, it's not her. Seriously guys it's not her.' Until I met my friend Aluna from AlunaGeorge and she was like 'No, it is her,' and I was like 'No f*king way! You're f*king kidding me! No, f*k!' So that was crazy.
 
MTV: What other festivals would you like to play at that you haven't already?

MØ: I would really love to play the Primavera Sound in Spain. I think because, with the Splendour in the Grass and Coachella and Glastonbury, those are beginning to happen, so Primavera is the last one I really really want. And then of course I want to do all the others again.
 
MTV: If you could collab with anyone tomorrow, who would it be?

MØ: Grimes, because she's so cool. I've always been into her, very much, but lately I've become a bit obsessed with her - not obsessed, but I've been listening a lot to her lately, actually. Just to her old stuff, and she's so cool and comes from a punk background too so I feel like again some kind of strange love. Just be badass with her, just do some crazy stuff and be cool with her. It's all about the music too but doing a really cool pop song that has a lot of edge and a lot of balls and being like, doing our thing and just have fun with it, I would love that.
 
MTV: You're working on a new album. Can you tell us about that?

MØ: The only thing I can tell you is that it has been so far, been a very different process than from the first because the first album was basically just me and a piano, writing the songs, sending them to my producer, he would work on them and we would finish them together. While now it's been like very, getting beats, getting in session, writing some stuff. Very very different, and I would say that none of the songs are done yet, only one is totally done, so it's hard for me really to say exactly, because I could definitely say something but it's too early, it can still change.

MTV: Will it be similar to the songs you've done already?

MØ: Yeah, it definitely has the vibe from that. It's funny because again I feel like it's a mixture of my personal taste but in a bit different way than the last album was, but I don't feel like it's not me at all.
