Pressing Questions With MAY-A

We accost Aussie artist MAY-A with a medley of life's most pressing questions.

In just a few short years, MAY-A (real name Maya Cumming) has carved such a distinct voice in Australian music. MAY-A is unrelenting: she injects blazing emotion into everything she writes, matching it with explosive and grandiose pop melodies that make her an undeniable musical force – and certainly an artist to watch closely.

She’s been releasing a steady string of singles, each one showcasing a different side of her persona that each add to her commanding intrigue. Most recently, she’s delivered a powerful lamentation of fading love with new track “Swing Of Things”. It contrasts vividly from the summery, care-free romance she sings of in “Time I Love To Waste” or the delicate and tender adoration blooming in “Apricots”. There’s no doubt that MAY-A will continue to reveal her many facets throughout her sure-to-be huge career. In fact, some of those very facets actually emerge right here, in this week’s Pressing Questions column. How lucky are we!

What is the meaning of life?

To enjoy it. (She says whilst complaining 90% of the time.)

Something COVID taught you

I have a dangerous reliance on my local café. And to always go back to your roots, COVID made me fall in love with writing by myself again.

Last movie you watched

Wayne’s World with my dad. I physically could not stop singing their theme song.

Best advice you’ve received

Comparison will kill you.

Someone you really admire

My mum, every time shit gets tough, I wonder how she seems to handle everything so well.

How do you feel about your hair?

I can’t believe you’d bring up such a touchy subject. I can’t stick to a hairstyle for longer than two weeks.

Describe yourself in three words

Impulsive, creative and a fuckwit.

One person or thing you think is underrated

RICE PUDDING. MAN THAT STUFF TASTES GOOD. Also the movie Palo Alto.

Would you rather travel 100 years to the past or the future?

I feel like I would be arrested or stoned to death or something going back to 1920.. So definitely the future.

What do you doubt most?

My relationships with people – something I should probably work on. Thanks MTV.

Daily ritual you couldn't live without

Peeing. If I did not pee I would probably die.

How are you at 8am? Are you a morning person?

Depends, how hungover am I?

Something you're passionate about

Music! Singing; playing instruments; jamming with friends; watching videos on writing songs; watching my friends write or writing with them; celebrities talking about it; sharing it; dancing to it.. you get the idea.

Tell us about your music in a sentence or two

My songs are an accurate depiction of how my brain works, they are a great reflection of what kind of phase I’m going through, lessons I’ve learned, the type of music I’m listening to. Each song is like a tattoo or a photograph – a moment in time that was once me and was once how I felt but is no longer any more. It’s cool being able to look back at all my unreleased songs and be able to pinpoint exactly what I was going through at that time.

MAY-A’s new single, “Swing Of Things” is out now. Stream the single here.
