Amber Heard Received Death Threats After Opening Up About Johnny Depp Domestic Abuse
As more and more women come forward to tell their stories about abuse, they never seem to get easier to hear. But we guess, that's the point.
Today Amber Heard has opened up about the horrific backlash she received from the public after she spoke out about being domestically abused by her ex-husband, Johnny Depp.
In an op-ed for the Washington Post, the 32-year-old says she didn't leave her apartment for months due to harrassment from the media and she had to change her phone number weekly because she was receiving so many death threats.
Furthermore she believed her career would suffer greatly as a result of coming forward with her story.
“Friends and advisers told me I would never again work as an actress — that I would be blacklisted. A movie I was attached to recast my role. I had just shot a two-year campaign as the face of a global fashion brand, and the company dropped me. Questions arose as to whether I would be able to keep my role of Mera in the movies ’Justice League’ and ’Aquaman,’” she said.
At the time she successfully received a restraining order against Depp and once their divorce was finalised she donated the money to ACLU and the Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles.
She is now continuing her fight in the #MeToo era and said “I want to ensure that women who come forward to talk about violence receive more support. We can work together to demand changes to laws and rules and social norms — and to right the imbalances that have shaped our lives.”
It is not an easy plight but we are so thankful for her brave actions and her efforts in helping change this systemic issue in our society.
