Britney Spears’ Dad Finally Steps Down From Her Conservatorship

After 13 years and repeated calls from britney to have her father removed as conservator of her estate after his alleged abuse of the role’s power, Jamie Spears is stepping down.

In a huge win for Britney Spears, her fans and the #FreeBritney movement at large, it’s being reported that her father Jamie Spears is stepping down from the role of her conservator – one he’s held since 2008.

According to court documents first peeped by TMZ, Jamie Spears is stepping down in the best interest of his daughter. While there remains no grounds to have him removed from the role, he “does not believe that a public battle with his daughter over his continuing service as her conservator would be in her best interests.”

In a statement, Spears’ newly-appointed lawyer Mathew Rosengart called Jamie’s decision "a major victory for Britney Spears and another step toward justice". "We are pleased that Mr Spears and his lawyer have today conceded in a filing that he must be removed," Rosengart said.

However, Rosengart also noted that he and Spears’ legal team “look forward to continuing our vigorous investigation into the conduct of Mr. Spears, and others, over the past 13 years, while he reaped millions of dollars from his daughter's estate, and I look forward to taking Mr. Spears's sworn deposition in the near future.”

Despite his stepping down, reports suggest that Jamie is going to work alongside the court and Rosengart in the process of appointing a new conservator. However, Jamie’s legal team did argue that “it is highly debatable whether a change in conservator at this time would be in Ms. Spears' best interests."

Jamie’s resignation marks the biggest development in Spears’ conservator case since she delivered an emotional, 24-minute testimony in court earlier this year, where she revealed the alleged control being exercised over her daily life – from not being able to get married to not being able to take out her IUD.

Shortly after the testimony was delivered, a judge denied Spears’ request to have Jamie removed from his role. Then, Jamie asked for an investigation into the abuse claims that Spears made, which led to back-and-forth between Jamie’s camp and co-conservator Jodi Montgomery, of Bessemer Trust.

Since then, Spears has experienced a slow and steady string of wins in her case, from being allowed to choose her own attorney (which led to the appointment of Rosengart) to even joining the #FreeBritney online movement.
