Sam Smith & Dua Lipa Blessed Us With Their Presence On Floats In Sydney’s Mardi Gras Parade
Sydney’s Mardi Grad Parade is done and dusted, but not without some surprise highlights as always!
Hordes of people (approximately 300,000 actually) lined Oxford Street for the annual parade, while hours’ worth was celebratory floats strutted their way along the route to copious cheers and confetti.
However, it was the surprise addition of international popstars Sam Smith and Dua Lipa that had everyone talking the morning after.
The ‘Dancing With A Stranger’ singer appeared on the Twenty10 float, an NSW organisation that offers support for 12 to 25-year-olds in the LGBTIQA+ community.
“On my float there are some beautiful, beautiful people, it is incredible and what Twenty10 do is absolutely sensational,” Smith told SBS on the night.
“I was watching last night everything they do as a charity and it is amazing... I am the one that is proud to walk with them,” they said.
Sam came out as non-binary last year and told SBS broadcasters Joel Creasey and Narelda Williams how their life has evolved since the announcement.
“I’ve always been non-binary since I was born, I only just found the words for it. But it definitely changed, and it is always difficult when you are asking other people to speak to you in a different way or asking other people to change their language because it becomes their business as well as yours,” they explained.
Sam was joined on Oxford St by one of Australia’s most famous drag queens, Courtney Act, who has been a long-time friend of Sam’s.
Dua appeared for photos with surf lifesavers, before heading to the Hordern Pavilion to perform at the official afterparty alongside Sam, Kesha and more.
Mardi Gras 2020 celebrated the theme ‘What Matters’, to encourage the examination of what we can do to build an inclusive future.
Many of the 191 floats on display had a call to action in theme with the night, including topics such as homelessness, bushfires and climate change.
It was truly a night to remember.
