Penn Badgley Admits That Playing Creepy Joe in ‘You’ Is ‘Shockingly Simple’

...

You is taking the Internet by storm. The second season of the successful Netflix drama has recently been released and it's garnered hectic attention for its stalker-murderer-but-oddly-still-cute lead character, Joe Goldberg.

Has us questioning a lot of things internally, tbh...

Joe is also v meme-worthy, with fans regularly paying out his stalker outfit: a basic baseball cap that apparently turns him invisible.

Played by Gossip Girl alumni, Penn Badgley, Joe is a bibliophile who stalks his bookshop customers until he finds the perfect girl to intensely pursue, fall in love with and ultimately murder.

As a viewer, it’s a tumultuous ride of watching a man do anything he can to be with this person, and then just obliterating them, quite frankly.

Penn recently appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, revealing what it’s like to play a sociopathic killer that has charm (it’s a little Ted Bundy reminiscent if you ask us…).

“I struggled greatly with the conflict of playing such a guy and him being partly so likable and having such a, as we say, thirsty response to him,” Penn told Stephen.

He demonstrates just how “shockingly simple” it is to transition from an average Joe, as we like to call it, to straight up creepy.

“Put yourself in a really questionable circumstance, an inappropriate circumstance, and then you do nothing,” was his token piece of advice before offering a smile down the camera which quickly turns blank and intimidating.

“Wow,” Colbert exclaimed. “A really Charlie Manson vibe.”

From playing a stalker-y Dan Humphries to Joe Goldberg, it’s safe to say Penn Badgley has got this whole creepy lover thing down pat.

Just don’t go falling for baseball cap wearing bookshop boys, okay?
