All this VMAs news is hard to keep track of, right? We hear you, and we're here to help. Here's everything you need to know about every artist and/or band taking to the 2020 MTV VMAs stage; and why we think they're deserving of the spot. It's a stunning line-up, if we do say ourselves...
K-pop dynamos BTS will take to the VMAs stage to perform their huge new single, "Dynamite". Released just last week, the song already set a YouTube record for the most views in the first 24 hours of release, topping 100 million views in that time period.
This is the first song the K-pop group have released entirely in English. While the guys weren't previously keen on veering from their linguistic roots, we can thank an unprecedented global pandemic for giving them a change of heart.
This will be their first time on the VMAs stage! Welcome, legends!
2. Doja Cat
Doja Cat is another best new VMAs artist to grace the stage at the 2020 awards show. The LA-born singer is also nominated for PUSH Artist of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Direction.
While this may be the singer’s first VMAs performance, she’s no stranger to MTV! Here she is performing the killer singles "Say So" and "Juicy" for MTV Push.
3. Ariana Grande & Lady Gaga
Now these guys are anything but VMAs newbies. Ariana already has five MTV VMAs under her belt, including Artist of the Year in 2019 – while Lady Gaga has a whopping thirteen to her name. The two artists – who lead this year’s VMA nominations – are set to debut their first-ever performance of their spirited anthem "Rain On Me". COVID-19 or not, we predict this performance is going to be mega.
Ariana Grande and Lady Gaga are each nominated for nine VMAs this year, including seven for "Rain On Me".
4. The Weeknd
We'll also see Grammy-winning artist The Weeknd hit the MTV VMAs stage this year. The Canadian powerhouse has six VMAs nominations going into the awards show, including the coveted Video of The Year nomination for the brilliant "Blinding Lights".
This will be The Weeknd’s second performance at the VMAs since his fiery performance of "Can't Feel My Face" in 2015. No really, he set the place on fire.
5. Miley Cyrus
VMA veteran Miley Cyrus – who even hosted the show in 2015 – is back to deliver the world-first premiere of her new single "Midnight Sky", which dropped earlier this month. And this straight after her iconic 2019 VMAs performance of "Slide Away"? We are blessed.
Miley’s music video for "Mother's Daughter" is also nominated for Best Art Direction and Best Editing.
6. Black Eyed Peas
Long-time faves Black Eyed Peas will also perform at this year’s VMAs. The legendary band, whose members include will.i.am, Taboo and apl.de.ap, will be gifting us with the world premiere of their brand-new banger, "Vida Loca". Stunning quarantine performance coming atcha!
Surprisingly, this will be the group’s first time performing at the VMAs (though they did perform at the pre-show 15 years ago!). It's about time, you guys!
US rapper DaBaby is up for four VMAs this year, including the prized Artist of the Year category. DaBaby is another VMAs newbie who'll be performing for us for the very first time.
The music video for his single, "Bop", nabbed VMAs nominations for Best Hip-Hop and Best Choreography.
Colombian artist Maluma will also grace the VMAs stage this year. The 26-year-old will be performing fresh off the release of his brand-new LP, "Papi Juancho". His single, "Qué Pena", is nominated for Best Latin alongside fellow Colombian, J Balvin.
This isn’t Maluma’s first time at the rodeo – he performed "Felices Los 4" at the MTV VMAs two years ago (keep your eyes peeled for a possible Camilla Cabello cameo!).
Miami-based boy band CNCO have come a long way since getting their start on "La Banda", a talent show created by Simon Cowell and produced by Ricky Martin.
The group, who sing in both Spanish and English, also nabbed nominations for Best Choreography and the shiny new Best Quarantine Performance category(!). Check out their stripped-down Unplugged At Home performance below.
10. VMAs pre-show artists
The VMAs pre-show is a party in its own right, with Jack Harlow, Chloe x Halle, Lewis Capaldi, Tate McRae, and Machine Gun Kelly featuring Travis Barker and Blackbear all on the lineup. Get across at all the pre-show details here.
That's a wrap, folks! We have a feeling it's going to be a pretty amazing show. And after everything 2020 has thrown at us? We deserve it.
The 2020 MTV VMAs will air live on Monday, August 31 from 8.30am AEST. Find everything you need to know at vma.mtv.com.
