Scarlett Johansson Has Stepped Down From Playing A Transgender Man After Receiving Major Backlash

-

A few weeks ago, it was announced that Scarlett Johansson was playing the role of transgender man Dante Tex Gill in upcoming film Rub & Tug.

Naturally, she copped a huge amount of backlash for this casting decision but it seemed like it didn't bother her, given a statement she made just last week.

However, she has since done a 180 and, in a statement to Out Magazine, announced that she has withdrawn herself from the project.

“I have great admiration and love for the trans community and am grateful that the conversation regarding inclusivity in Hollywood continues,” she said.

“While I would have loved the opportunity to bring Dante’s story and transition to life, I understand why many feel he should be portrayed by a transgender person, and I am thankful that this casting debate, albeit controversial, has sparked a larger conversation about diversity and representation in film.”

This is not the first time Johansson has received criticism for a casting, as in 2017 she was accused of white-washing for her role in the live-action remake of Ghost In The Shell.
