Jameela Jamil Has Come Out As Queer

The actress and activist tweeted out an emotional message to her fans.

Sending all our love to Jameela Jamil today after she has come out as queer.

“I didn’t come from a family with *anyone* openly out. It’s also scary as an actor to openly admit your sexuality, especially when you’re already a brown female in your thirties,” the actress and activist wrote in a tweet.

Jameela tweeted her news after she faced backlash following the announcement yesterday that she would be a lead judge on Legendary, a new HBO TV series centred around voguing. Some people, who were initially under the impression that Jameela was straight, were not pleased about her being a key figure on a dance competition show about the queer, and largely African-American and Latina, art form.

Jameela admits she’s new to ballroom culture, but is excited to help it reach a new audience. “I know that my being queer doesn’t qualify me as ballroom. But I have privilege and power and a large following to bring to this show, (as does the absolutely iconic Megan Thee Stallion,) and it’s beautiful contestants and ballroom hosts.”

The reaction on Twitter to Jameela's tweet has been mixed to say the least – some responses were kind, others far from it. Here’s a few of the nice ones.

It's not easy putting yourself out there and Jameela has done so with a lot of grace – we're wishing her all the best.
