Blue Ivy Wins Her First Major Music Award … At Age 8

She's already more successful than pretty much all of us.

Comparing is unhelpful, we know this. Everyone is on their own path in life and getting all stressed about where other people are at versus where you're at is a complete waste of time and energy, and it never ends well. We’re usually pretty good at stamping out that ol’ negative thought pattern … but then you hear the news that Blue Ivy, a literal eight-year-old, is nabbing industry music awards and that hard work goes straight out the window.

Beyoncé and Jay Z’s offspring snagged an NAACP Image Award over the weekend for her collab with her mum, Saint Jhn, and Wizkid on the song “Brown Skin Girl”, which was released exclusively for the new Lion King film last year. Blue Ivy sings in the chorus of the song and earned a writing credit for the tune too, per Variety

In all fairness, though, this song – an anthem for cultural pride and female empowerment – is an incredibly important one and deserves all the recognition it’s received and then some. Apple Music's stats show that “Brown Skin Girl” was the most-streamed female song in Sub-Saharan Africa in 2019 and the #BrownSkinGirlChallenge, which saw young WOC around the world sharing videos of themselves joyfully dancing to the tune, went viral upon the song’s release a few months ago too. (Even Lupita Nyong'o got involved.)

What's next for Blue Ivy? World domination, maybe? Well, whatever the young muso gets up to next, we're sure it'll be incredible.
