Aw, yeah: BENEE just nabbed an MTV EMA! The 20 year-old singer, Stella Rose Bennett, took home the Best New Zealand Act at the 2020 awards, beating out fellow Kiwis, The Naked and Famous, Jawsh 685, BAYNK and more.
"Hello everybody," BENEE said in her virtual acceptance speech. "I just wanted to say thank you so much for this award – this is crazy. Thank you so much for voting and everyone for listening to music. It's wild – I don't understand it. But I'm sending my love to all of you guys and hope you're all staying safe and I look forward to seeing you when I can."
A self-described "normal idiot from New Zealand", BENEE began her music career by posting covers to SoundCloud. Fast forward to last month and BENEE announced the release of her highly-anticipated debut album, Hey u x, featuring guest spots from Lily Allen, Flo Milli, Grimes and Mallrat.
Of her latest single from the album, "Happen to Me", BENEE says the song is "super important" to her. "It's the opening track [on the album]," she told Vogue Australia. "It's the first song where I've written about anxiety. The lyrics are pretty dark. Life is pretty crazy right now, and I think it's important to talk about this kind of stuff."
BENEE's debut album, Hey u x, will drop November 13. While you wait, you can watch some of the many glorious EMAs performances from this morning here.
