Today is a huge day for emoji news and therefore a huge day for language, because emojis are obvs the most important language now. With Unicode announcing a massive 72 new emojis earlier, Facebook have gone and topped that by announcing 1,500 new emojis will be coming out on messenger TODAY!
And it’s not just a couple of extra types of food that look a bit phallic either, no no no. The new emojis are embracing diversity like never before.
You can now pre-set skin tones which mean you don’t have to fiddle about finding the one that fits you over and over again, there's more gender diversity in emojis like the police officer, runner and swimmer and even, finally, some representation for those among us with red hair!
Facebook had this to say of the announcement:
“Emojis have changed the way we talk to each other - whether it's a smiley face to show you're happy, a thumbs up, or a pizza when hungry, emojis are a fun, easy way to express yourself when words just aren't enough — and people love them! In fact, nearly 10% of mobile sends in Messenger include emojis. However, not all platforms have kept up with emoji standards as they've evolved - which means sometimes the emoji you wanted to send wasn't the one that showed up. Nor are they living up to the gender and skin tone diversity that we see in our world everyday”
It’s great to see Facebook embracing diversity in the online language that we all love so much. Yay new emojis! *fire emoji*, *firework emoji* *massive thumps up emoji*.
