2021 has been Olivia Rodrigo’s year, there’s no question about that. It should come as no surprise, then, that she dominated this year’s MTV Video Music Awards. The SOUR superstar took home three Moon People tonight – ‘Push Performance of the Year’, ‘Song of the Year’ and ‘Best New Artist’.
She was never a shoo-in for the latter though and was up against some pretty stiff competition – namely Australia’s own The Kid LAROI. After he opened the ceremony with his performance of “Stay” with Justin Bieber, LAROI also sat by as the ‘Best New Artist’ category was rounded down to just him and Rodrigo.
Rodrigo, ever the gracious winner, took to the stage and almost immediately gave props to the South Sydney rapper.
“I want to thank Laroi who inspires me every day to be a better artist,” she said, “I love him so much.”
Strangely, this isn’t even the first instance of the mutual love between Rodrigo and LAROI. On the red carpet earlier today, LAROI was asked who he was most excited to see perform.
“I’m excited to see Olivia, that’s my friend.”
We love to bloody see it, folks.
On top of winning three awards, Olivia also tore the stage up with a school dance of your dreams, performing her absolute banger “Good 4 U”.
