Iggy Azalea Gets Into Hot Water Responding To Claims She Appropriates Black Culture
Iggy Azalea is finally responding to claims she has culturally appropriated black people. And she might have dug herself into an even deeper hole.
“I’m still going to make the same type of music and still be ridiculous and larger than life. So I can’t be that f**king sorry about it,” the Australian rapper told Cosmopolitan in an interview for her sophomore album In My Defense.
And with her tumultuous history with cultural authenticity, there is a fair bit to defend.
“You could ask one person of the same race, ‘Does this affect you?’ and they will say yes,” she said. “But another person will say no. They could be from the same place, same everything, but have different perspectives about it.”
Yep, Iggy says she's not going to apologise for being “a white woman profiting off black culture,” as Cosmopolitan astutely puts it.
As you can imagine, the Twittersphere is not too happy about her comments:
Iggy has responded to the backlash, trying to clarify her quotes in the article.
It’s 2019. Cultural appropriation is a no, freedom of expression is a yes, and this is a damn grey area. At the end of the day, let’s just have nice things and let everyone be. As Iggy puts it in her track ‘Started’, “I started to say sorry / But f**k that sh*t.”
