Everything We Know About The ‘Gossip Girl’ Reboot

Grab your headbands, ‘Gossip Girl’ 2.0 is underway. Here’s everything we know about the HBO reboot.

You know you love them. Fans of the Upper East Siders were treated to fabulous news in 2019 when it was confirmed that Gossip Girl would officially be returning to our screens. And now it's time to break out the Dom Pérignon and dust off your designer headbands: Gossip Girl 2.0 is almost here.

The original smash hit show centred on the lives of Manhattan's elite, with iconic fashion, irresistible drama and a mysterious narrator to tie it all together, voiced by Kristen Bell (who will return as the voice of ‘Gossip Girl’ in the new series). It was addictive, dramatic, sexy and soapy drama that has since cemented itself as one of the most recognisable and celebrated teen shows ever. Blair Waldorf (Leighton Meester) and Serena Van Der Woodsen (Blake Lively) were at the very heart of the original Gossip Girl series, the premise being that thetwo New York private school teens and their extended circles were under the social surveillance of a tea-spilling 'Gossip Girl'.

As fun as the original TV show was, this reboot is gearing up to look a little different, with a whole new generation of private school teens taking centre stage. Unlike other recent reboots, the original cast members of Gossip Girl including Leighton Meester, Blake Lively, Penn Badgley, Chace Crawford and Ed Westwick won't be starring in this series. But wait! All hope is not lost! There are talks the original Gossip Girl could make cheeky guest appearance, which we'd be so on board with.

Here's everything you need to know about the new Gossip Girl.

Where can I watch the ‘Gossip Girl’ reboot in Australia?

Great news for us down under: it's been confirmed that Gossip Girl 2.0 will be hitting out screens via Binge. The show is airing in the U.S. on HBO Max, and many HBO programs are exclusive to Foxtel, so it makes sense. “Binge” is right – we suspect we'll power through the reboot in 12 hours flat.

Who is working on the reboot of ‘Gossip Girl’?

Joshua Safran, who was the executive producer of the later seasons of the original show, will write and executive produce the reboot. The reboot won't air on network television, but will have a home on WarnerMedia's upcoming streaming service, HBO Max.

Safran worked closely with original creators Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage, so you know the reboot is in good hands.

What will the ‘Gossip Girl’ reboot be about?

The new series starts off nearly a decade after the original storyline with a whole new group of Manhattan teens. The log line of the new iteration of Gossip Girl, according to Deadline, reads: "Eight years after the original website went dark, a new generation of New York private school teens are introduced to the social surveillance of Gossip Girl.”

"The prestige series will address just how much social media — and the landscape of New York itself — has changed in the intervening years." Juicy.

Safran also took to Twitter to let us know what tone to expect with the new series. As iconic as it is, it's safe to say that the original Gossip Girl hasn’t always aged well. Safran has let us know there wont' be any "slut shaming" or "cat fights" as he believes those are not needed "to be in this show for it to be fun. GG2 is sex positive.” We love to see it.

Who will star in ‘Gossip Girl’ 2.0?

In March this year, it was announced that the coveted Queen Bee of the Upper East Side (a place kept warm by Leighton Meester) will be played by actress Emily Alyn Lind.

Emily Alyn Lind, known for her role in Code Black, will star as Audrey, a character who has "been in a long term relationship and is beginning to wonder what more could be out there." Sounds like there'll be a few love triangles on the horizon for Audrey.

After the casting of Emily Alyn Lind was announced, four other members of the cast were revealed. Lind will be joined by Whitney Peak from Netflix's Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Eli Brown from Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists, Johnathan Fernandez from Lethal Weapon, and broadway actor Jason Gotay. Other confirmed cast members include: Jordan Alexander, Thomas Doherty, Zión Moreno, Tavi Gevinson, Evan Mock, Savannah Smith, Adam Chanler-Berat, Laura Benanti, Donna Murphy and Elizabeth Lail.

Even though we're unlikely to see OG cast members playing a big role, never fear: Kristen Bell is returning as the narrator and the voice of Gossip Girl – as she so deserves. "XOXO Gossip Girl" – no one says it like Kristen.

How many episodes of the ‘Gossip Girl’ reboot will there be?

The season will contain ten drama-filled hour-long episodes. That honestly sounds doable in a couple of afternoons, or a single weekend glued to the television. No talk yet if there'll be any episodes after that. We can only hope and pray.

Will the show be more diverse?

The original Gossip Girl was not known for its diverse representation. But the Gossip Girl reboot is gearing up to fix the ills of its predecessor.

Writer and executive producer Joshua Safran appeared at the Vulture Festival in November 2020 and commented on the lack of diversity of the original series and what his hopes were for the reboot.

"There was not a lot of representation the first time around on the show," he said. "I was the only gay writer I think the entire time I was there. Even when I went to private school in New York in the '90s, the school didn't necessarily reflect what was on Gossip Girl. So, this time around the leads are nonwhite.”

"There's a lot of queer content on this show. It is very much dealing with the way the world looks now, where wealth and privilege come from, and how you handle that. The thing I can’t say is there is a twist, and that all relates to the twist."

When will the ‘Gossip Girl’ reboot be released?

In late April, the Gossip Girl Twitter account dropped this bomb on us: the show was returning - and soon. "Good afternoon, followers," the Tweet started.

"I need no introduction, but these New York elite do. Pleased to present your newest obsession — coming to @hbomax this July. Clear your calendars accordingly."

The Gossip Girl reboot will hit our screens this July. We literally can't wait.
