Here's Why Gang Of Youths Are The Most Important Band In Australia

..

We know what you're thinking.

"Is it even possible for me to love Gang of Youths more than I already do?"

Well, actually, it is.

Apart from being one of Australia's most exciting indie rock bands, Gang of Youths are making music for the betterment of humanity.

1. They're Influencing Positive Change

Gang of Youths recently announced a tour in collaboration with PLUS1, where $1 from every ticket purchased goes to support Aboriginal Legal Service (ALS).

The tour, titled the Say Yes To Life Tour, will assist the initative that provides legal services to influence positive change amongst Aboriginal communities.

It's a cause which hits close to home for Gang of Youths, who are made up of a mix of nationalities, from Korean-American, to Polish-Australian and Samoan-Jewish.

2. They Aren't Afraid Of Keeping It Real

Gang of Youths are no strangers for fighting against adversity. The band itself has been through its fair share of personal struggles.

Lyrics from the band's 2015 album The Positions detailed songwriter Le'aupepe's relationship with his wife, who was diagnosed with cancer a year after they met. Their marriage ultimately came to an end, with Le'aupepe attempting suicide in 2014, having to get his stomach pumped before going to rehab.

“4 years ago, I tried to kill myself,” he said in a heartfelt Instagram post. “There was this moment, where the belief that there would never be anything more than the sh*t and piss in everything overwhelmed me for a moment, and I made a decision to make it all stop for good.

'My job leaves me depleted and often sleepless, ridden with anxiety and worry. Often, I am not worthy of the platform onto which I’ve stumbled. Often I feel like letting the dark swallow me up. There are days I roll over and look at my wife and wonder why she bothers sticking around — but she does, she has, and miraculously she continues to do so,"

"In Gang of Youth we want to be compassionate and emotive. We're not interested in being harbingers of a new trend in cool, cerebral indie rock," David said in an interview with SMH

3. They're Going To Be Huge

Gang of Youths absolutely cleaned up at the 2017 ARIAs, picking up four awards from 14 nominations.

Since then, the band has been tipped for global success.

The band continues to land major festival spots and play to huge crowds all over the world.

Perhaps the most exciting and recent development in Gang of Youths already impressive journey to the top is their upcoming performance for MTV Unplugged Melbourne.

“‘MTV Unplugged’ is pretty extraordinary,” says Gang Of Youths frontman Dave Le’aupepe. “To hear the crackles in their voice, something that feels intimate and really powerful.”

‘MTV Unplugged’ debuted in 1989, and has hosted iconic performances from the likes of Nirvana, Eric Clapton, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Adele, Oasis, The Cure and Florence + The Machine.

You can catch Gang of Youths highly anticipated MTV Unplugged Melbourne performance on the 25th July at the Cobblestone Pavilion in Melbourne.
