New Zealand police have just confirmed that there have been multiple fatalities after a gunman opened fire at two mosques in Christchurch earlier today. One person is reportedly in custody, however police believe there may be other offenders.

Witnesses reported hearing shots from the gunman - believed to be a 28-year-old Australian - who according to reports, live-streamed the mass shooting inside the Al Noor Mosque. People were also reportedly shot at the nearby Linwood Masjid mosque. 

In a tweet posted less than an hour ago, New Zealand police said, "we urge New Zealanders to stay vigilant and report any suspicious behaviour immediately to 111."

"...We are still working to resolve this incident and we continue to urge Christchurch residents to stay inside. We ask all mosques nationally to shut their doors, and advise that people refrain from visiting these premises until further notice. 

Prime minister Jacinda Ardern has addressed the media, saying it has been "one of New Zealand's darkest days."
