Good news for Courtney Barnett fans: her iconic MTV Unplugged session that recorded late last year in Melbourne has been released as an album, and it’s out now on CD and (even better!) vinyl. Plus, you can stream the tunes too.
Barnett’s Unplugged session saw the musician delve into new territory, with vulnerable and emotional performances of hits like “Depreston”, “Avant Gardener” and “Sunday Roast” and duets with Aussie music legend, Paul Kelly. Courtney’s usual bandmates, Dave Mudie and Bones Sloane joined her on stage too, along with cellist Lucy Waldron and musicians Marlon Williams and Evelyn Ida Morris.
Courtney’s MTV Unplugged performance puts the Melbourne-based muso among some of the world’s most celebrated artists: Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain, Alice In Chains’ Layne Staley, Liam Gallagher, Bob Dylan and Alicia Keys have all done an Unplugged session over the years. “Unplugged is so nostalgic for me,” Courtney said. “We had two Unplugged Records in our CD collection growing up and I know those records inside out because we listened to them every day.”
Her set list included a mix of classic Barnett bangers, along with her newer tunes and covers. “I wanted to have a mixture of old songs, new songs and covers, and tracks that we don’t perform all the time – it’s been interesting to see the songs through a different filter, and it brings out this other emotional side to the music and the lyrics,” Courtney said of the set.
