No one has had a bigger year than Olivia Rodrigo. After dropping the bombshell that was ‘drivers licence’ in January, the Disney star has gone on to dominate 2021 like nobody else - seriously, can you name a single bigger record this year than SOUR? As such, Olivia was one of the most anticipated 2021 VMAs performers, and boy did she deliver with her scintillating rendition of “Good 4 U”.
Ascending from the ceiling like the pop angel she is on a formation of disco balls, the iconic opening guitars rattled the Barclays Center. With butterflies glittering around the stage, and across her dress, Rodrigo threw heer all into her VMA debut. Flanked with dancers in various eras of prom garb, she put on the school dance we all wished we could’ve had.
The performance was made even better with the chants from the crowd. Everyone in the Barclays Center must be a die-hard fan (who isn’t?) because they were screaming every word and Rodrigo was absolutely feeding on that energy. The song came to an explosive climax in its anthemic final chorus, with balloons and confetti raining from the sky.
And as the confetti began to settle and we began to think Rodrigo was done, she stared into the camera, said “good for you, i see you moved on really easily” and smashed the camera with her microphone. Undeniable icon shit.
